Civil War

Assignment – Pick ONE of the following TWO prompts:

1) Why do you think the Civil War was fought? Was it to end slavery, for state’s rights, or for the power to control the West? Explain your answer. Also, what do you think ultimately caused the Civil War? Was it westward expansion to Kansas and Nebraska, the annexation of Texas, failed “compromises” (think 1787, 1820, 1850), or something else? Why is your reason more significant than the others? (Read chapters 10 and 12 for this assignment.)

2) What did American “freedom” mean just before, and just after, the Civil War? How was freedom defined in the North during the Second Great Awakening? Think about suffrage, citizenship, and faith. How was freedom defined during Reconstruction? Think about freedpeople culture, Constitutional amendments, and Black Codes. In the end, was Reconstruction a productive, or destructive, period? (Read chapters 11 and 14 for this assignment.)

PAPER REQUIREMENTS:

Thesis Statement: Papers must contain a thesis statement, located in the first paragraph of the essay. The thesis statement should answer the question(s) of whatever prompt you choose. The thesis statement should not rehash ‘what’ happened, but instead should answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ history unfolded the way it did.

Length and Format: Papers should be at least 5 pages, but not more than 7, not including the Word Cited/bibliography. Papers should be double-spaced, typed, 12-point Times New Roman or Helvetica font, with one-inch margins. You must submit the paper as a PDF or Word document.

Sources:

PRIMARY: Papers must contain at least four primary sources from the (Hewitt, Nancy A., and Steven F. Lawson. Exploring American Histories, Volume 1: A Brief Survey with Sources. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2012.)
SECONDARY: For extra points, papers should use at least one secondary source from JSTOR or EBSCO, in addition to the (Hewitt, Nancy A., and Steven F. Lawson. Exploring American Histories, Volume 1: A Brief Survey with Sources. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2012.)

Citations: Papers must cite all sources used, including the textbook, primary sources, and JSTOR/EBSCO secondary sources. You may use either MLA or Chicago style, but it is your responsibility to follow the correct guidelines for citations. Works Cited or bibliography pages must be included with the paper, not as a separate document.

Do not place too much trust in online citation and Works Cited generators–they often produce errors for which you will be held responsible. Do NOT use websites as sources.

Style: Papers must conform to the Style Guide, available on the course’s eLearn page, which should be reviewed carefully before you begin the paper. Also, remember you can (and should) visit my office hours at least one full week before the paper is due to go over a draft, or visit the WRITE Studio in order to get help editing, polishing, and redrafting your essay.
