The Literature Review will be divided into:

Etiology, Diagnosis/Assessment, Treatment and Referral.

The paper is to follow APA format.

The literature review, involves the research a

specific disorder from the disorder classifications within the current Diagnostic and Statistical

Manual of Mental Health Disorders. You must cite a minimum of 25 professional sources

within a minimum of 30 pages written in APA format in this comprehensive literature review.

Your literature review will have seven specific parts:

  1. Title Page for Literature Review

Refer to your Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for

formatting requirements.

  1. Introduction: The introduction of a literature review consists of:

A clear thesis statement, which represents the main idea you want to discuss about the specific disorder you are researching.

 Words that make the reader want to read further. To accomplish this, begin your paper with:

  • a question.
  • a definition.
  • a metaphor that compares or contrasts.

 The purpose of the introduction to a literature review is to offer the reader a clear understanding of what is studied.

 Use APA citations as needed.

  1. Etiology

This section provides the needed background information, causes, and origins of the

disorder that is your focus. The goal is to find out history, causes, and origins of the specific disorder and classification you have chosen. Think of it as doing detective work.

Use the following questions as a guide to help you write this section. Not all questions may apply to the disorder and classification that is your focus.

 Specific Diagnostic Classification

  • What is the history of this disorder and classification?
  • When was the disorder first discovered?
  • What population is most likely to be diagnosed with this specific disorder?
  • What population has been diagnosed most often within this classification of disorders?
  • What additional information that relates to this etiology have you discovered?

 Use APA citations as needed.

  1. Assessment/Diagnosis Section

Use the following questions as a guide to help you write this section. Not all questions may apply to the specific disorder you are researching.

 Assessment: The assessment process involves several different pieces of information and is only the beginning of the process of identifying the disorder.

  • What methods of assessment are used to identify this disorder?
  • What psychological, neurological, and/or medical tests are used? Why?
  • Describe the clinical interview used for assessment and the counseling theory that it comes from.

 Diagnosis: Match the symptoms identified through the above assessment to the symptoms of a specific disorder to define the diagnosis.

  • What symptoms are specific to the disorder you are studying?
  • What are the psychological symptoms?
  • What are the physical symptoms?
  • What are the duration and intensity requirements?
  • Which symptoms are particular to this disorder as compared to other disorders within the classification? In other words, how would you know that you have made the correct diagnosis?

  1. Treatment: this section is concerned with the process of identifying and discussing empirically validated treatment methods (methods based on research).

What empirically validated treatment methods, otherwise known as best practice, treat this disorder?

Explain how these treatment methods were normed:

  • What studies were done?
  • What population was studied?
  • What was the result?
  • Was it a short-term study (6 months or less) or a long-term study (more than 6 months)?
  • What specific recommendations did the researchers who studied these

treatment methods make?

  • What questions were outlined for further research?
  • What is involved with each type of treatment?
  • How long in general does each type of treatment require?
  • Why are these treatment methods effective for this disorder?
  • Would these treatment methods be effective for the population you want to work with? Why? or Why not?

Note other interesting findings.

  1. Conclusion: Conclude your literature review in a way that provides:
  • A clear understanding of the significance of your work.
  • A brief review of important points.
  • Your personal reaction to your literature review.
  • What have you, the researcher, learned from this process?
  • How has it changed the way you view the topic?
  • What do you agree and/or disagree with?
  • What further research is needed?

  1. Reference Page: Include all references for work cited in this section.

Your literature review must meet APA guidelines and be written in third person.
