Assessment Item 3
Assessment name: Project (research)
Details of Assessment Item 3:
- Introduction (1000 words)
- Literature Review (2500 words) which has already been written by you, just need some Edit.
- Research Design (1500 words)
Task Description- Elements of Assessment Item 3
Introduction. State briefly the overall study design including an outline of the rationale or purpose for the proposed investigation. Present an overview of the sections that follow the introduction in the remainder of your document (i.e., signposting for the reader).
Research problem. This is a statement of precisely what it is you are seeking to investigate. The problem will be framed against existing literature and policy (if relevant) and issues of international and national importance for your field of study (e.g., curriculum, pedagogy, policy). The rationale for the proposed investigation will be presented.
Literature analysis. Refer to Assessment Item 2 Task Description. This section of Assessment Item 3 must address the same description and criteria as per Assessment Item 2. Present an analysis of existing literature to synthesize perspectives related to your field of research. Outline previous approaches of investigation into the issue/s of relevance to your study (where applicable). Identify the need for further research on your topic and/or limitations of existing knowledge that will be addressed through your proposed study (see Research Purpose). When reviewing the work of others, explain any necessary technical terminology, avoid using idiosyncratic terms used by authors and explain any euphemism, metaphor or other weasel words in your own terms. Do not foreground the names of authors when presenting their ideas. Lead with ideas and research outcomes from the works of others and add the names of the authors to parentheses in correct APA style.
Theoretical Framework. Detail the theoretical concepts relevant to your topic that will guide your proposed study. This involves a detailed account of the concepts or constructs that inform your understanding about the topic/issue of investigation. These constructs may also inform the data analysis described in the Research Design section.
Research purpose. A clear statement that follows logically from your research problem will be detailed. This will include the aims/research questions/hypotheses relevant to your planned investigation. Connections between your research purpose and the research problem need to be detailed clearly. Present research questions, problem statement, and/or aims emerging from literature review. Articulate why your proposed research should be conducted by explaining the perceived value of it and what it can contribute to existing knowledge within the field (see Literature Review)
Research Design. Present an outline of the intended context for the study, the research strategy you plan to use, the participants or artefacts that will be accessed, the methods used to produce data sources, the methods of analysis that will be applied to the data sources. Provide an outline of the rationale and process for selecting the sample/ informants/ participants. Some of the research design can be summarized in a table. Outline a plan for the ethical conduct of the proposed study. Your job in this section is to explain how you are applying your understanding of research design and research strategies to plan the conduct of your project. It is not a summary of what other scholars have to say about different research strategies.
Limitations/Delimitations of the proposed study. Based on your understanding of your research design and the purpose of your intended study, outline the potential limitations and delimitations of the approach/es taken to understanding phenomena central to the investigation.
Writing Advice: It is recommended that for this assessment item, you begin the writing process by detailing your intended research design. Then write the literature review that is relevant to the key constructs your research intends to examine based on the research design. Follow this with writing your theoretical framework, which conceptualizes the key concepts at the center of your study. From this develop the research problem and write the introduction last. The other necessary elements for assessment item 3 can be written at any time. When this sequence is complete, revise your document from the beginning and make sure that what you have written in each section aligns with what is presented in the subsequent sections.
Grade: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. See Table 1 overleaf for specific marking criteria and standards descriptors.
Length: approx. 5000 words with Literature Review
Group or Individual: Individual
Criteria for Assessment Item 3
|1) Alignment of the components in the proposed study||Document presents a research proposal including a purpose/ aim/ question/s/ hypothesis
Literature relevant to the study has been summarized and documented through referencing.
An approach to conducting research has been described.
Description of methods, procedures and ethical concerns is evident.
|Clearly articulated the components of research design in a way that is coherent with the field of research in which the proposed study is situated.
Arguments for proposing the research are compelling, coherent and supported by appropriate research literature and other salient policy documents (if relevant). (“Is my argument as to why this is important research been soundly grounded in literature and other compelling and relevant documents”).
Arguments are relevant to a wide audience including national and international scholars.
Demonstrated understanding of research design and research strategy.
Proposed a series of methods that are aligned with the methodology and are likely to address the research purposes.
|2) Development of arguments from literature review||Synthesized perspectives from a range of literature sources including recent studies investigating issues relevant to the proposed investigation. There is evidence of critical engagement with the literature demonstrating understanding of main themes, main thinkers and discretion in the level of critique. Identified the key influences (theoretical and philosophical) on research in the field.
A well-structured argument is developed from the literature to justify the investigation. (“Have I provided a summary in which the significance of the literature review is clear and the need for the study, conceptual framework, or major perspectives have been identified?”)
Clear links exist between the literature and the research aims/ questions/ hypotheses.
Potential contribution of the study to the field of research in which it is situated has been argued clearly and convincingly. The idea for the study is original and likely to make a contribution to knowledge. A convincing and defensible argument is made regarding the potential contribution made by the study.
Appropriate theoretical/ conceptual frameworks have been articulated that address the phenomena in the proposed investigation.
|3) Understanding and suitability of research design, methods, procedures, ethical issues.||A comprehensive account of the research design, it’s suitability for the study, has been developed. Developed a coherent argument for application of the specified research strategy to study the phenomenon/a central to the study. (“Why is my research strategy suitable for investigating the central phenomena in my study?”). The research strategy is linked explicitly to the aims/purpose of the study and the research questions.
|4) Mechanics of Style||Well structured and coherent and scholarly document with clear introduction, connections between paragraphs, signposting, and clarity of expression (flows smoothly) leading to a scholarly submission (“Is this an easy to read, coherent and well expressed?”) (appropriate use of headings/subheadings, structural elements, grammar)
Addressed the requirements of APA style integration of scholarly literature/sources (e.g. direct quotes, paraphrasing) is evident. Addressed the requirements of APA style for structuring document.
Succinct document that adheres to the specific word count restrictions.
Please note, the headings used in this assessment task sheet will not necessarily reflect the way in which you organize information in your document in response to Assessment Item 3. Please follow the conventional organization of information that is commonly found within thesis documents relevant to your field of research.
