Scholarly White Paper

Scholarly White Paper (150 points) The final white paper that each person creates should be between 10 – 12 pages (1.5 space, 1 in margins). It should use the format discussed in class and referenced by the class text. It should be theoretically based and focus on a specific area of exploration by each student and reference the class readings and related scholarly and applied research, as well as one or more executive interviews that each student completed. The ultimate goal of the white paper should be to deeply address an important topic from a theoretical perspective that is relevant to a specific audience that the student wishes to connect with. It should support the student’s aim toward career advancement, entrepreneurial development, or corporate innovation. It should demonstrate thought leadership on a specific topic and be of publishable quality.

Outline of Scholarly White Paper (10 – 12 pages)

  • State and Explain the Challenge faced by the target reader. (Include hard data and perhaps a brief case example. Use footnote citations.) (2 – 3 pages)
  • Provide review of scholarly literature (e.g. 5 – 8 scholarly articles) relevant to challenge (e.g. supporting theoretical framework and empirical findings to examine the issue.) (3 – 4 pages)
  • Provide Scholarly Argument based on relevant theoretical and empirical literature to deduce non-obvious potential course of action to address the challenge (e.g. 3 recommendations) (2 – 3 pages)
  • Discuss Benefits of proposed recommendations to the Reader. (2 – 3 pages)
  • Call to Action – (What you would like the reader to do next [further readings, contact you, etc.] in line with your career or entrepreneurial objective); include your own brief (50 – 100 word) biography relevant to your paper and career objective. (1 – 2 pages)

Draft of Scholarly White Paper (75 points) A preliminary draft version of the white paper will be turned in prior to the final draft and will receive feedback and a grade. Use outline as indicated above for draft and final version.

An approximation of evaluation criteria for both the initial and final draft of the scholarly white paper follows.
