You are the administrator of a small/medium sized enterprise. You have been asked by the directors to develop a company database. The directors are interested in reports that will give them the following information:
- Customers arranged by county and town
- Customers arranged by Sales Representative
- Area Sales offices’ contact details and which sales representatives are assigned to those offices
- Sales figures by sales area and individual representative
- Overall sales figures
Norfolk and Goode is an old-fashioned, reputable firm, selling household implements on a door-to-door basis, operating in the North-East of England. They have a head office based in Newcastle and Sales Area offices in Tyne and Wear, Durham, North Yorkshire and Northumberland.
Each Sales Area office has at least two sales representatives assigned to it. Each Sales rep is responsible for the orders from his/her customers within his/her sales area.
Use your inventiveness and imagination to provide a database for the company. It should contain at least the following (but you can include anything that you feel is relevant):
- Tables (at least the following): Area office, Sales reps, Customers, Orders and Products
- Forms for entering data in each table
- Queries: at least those that would provide the information requirements listed in the background information (above)
- Reports: corresponding to the queries
You may use the customer list from the practical classes as the basis for your customer table. You may also use the design of the tables from your practical classes as the basis for some of your other tables.
You are free to complete this as an individual assignment or in pairs or teams of three. The grade for group work will be shared.
Method: To be confirmed. Hard copy of reports as well as electronic submission of database through Turnitin.
Any late submissions will be subject to the usual University regulations (see module information pack). Any supporting documentation must be submitted at this time.
Your database will be marked on the following criteria:
Quality: you will be marked on the quality of the information that is provided in the queries and reports and the data held in the tables.
Completeness: your database should have all of the required tables, forms, queries and reports. You may include additions to these, but any additions must be relevant.
Functionality: it is expected that all of your queries and forms will work.
An excellent mark (above 70%) will be given for a database that meets or exceeds all of the requirements, is complete, provides usable information and functions correctly, especially if there is substantial evidence of your own input to the design and population of the database.
A good mark (between 60% and 70%) will be given for a database that meets all of the requirements, but uses little more than the information contained in the practical handouts.
A reasonable mark (between 50% and 60%) will be given for a database that meets most of the requirements and functions adequately.
A mark between 40% and 50% will be given for a database that meets some of the requirements, but still provides some useful information.
A fail grade (less than 40%) will be given for a database that only meets some of the requirements, and does not provide much useful information.
